Woods-Oh Semifinal Showdown Set in U.S. Junior Championships
The U.S. Junior Golf Championships will have a Southern California flavor in the semifinals when Tiger Woods of Cypress plays Ted Oh of Torrance this morning at Waverley Country Club in Portland, Ore.
Woods, 17, the two-time defending champion, cruised past two more opponents to force the showdown against Oh.
Woods beat Grady Girard of Newport, Vt., 4 and 2, then defeated Aaron Wright of Ana, Ill., 3 and 2 in the quarterfinals.
Oh, 16, beat Patrick Malone of Kingwood, Tex., 3 and 2, then dominated Matthew Doyle of West Simsbury, Conn., 4 and 3.
The Woods-Oh match pits the only male two-time U.S. Junior champion and the second-youngest U.S. Open qualifier.
Charles Howell of Augusta, Ga., the youngest player in the tournament at 14, will face Ryan Armour, 17, of Silver Lake, Ohio, in the other semifinal.
The championship match is scheduled for Saturday afternoon.
It will be the first time Woods and Oh have met in match play.
“I don’t know what he’s playing,” Woods said. “I just know how good I’m playing.”
Oh said the match was nothing special.
