BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJORS : Henderson Sits Amid Trade Talk
Rickey Henderson, the subject of trade rumors in the final year of a four-year contract, was removed from the Oakland Athletics’ starting lineup Friday night.
Athletic spokesman Jay Alves gave two reasons for Henderson’s absence from the lineup, saying he had sore legs and later saying he had a stiff neck.
Oakland General Manager Sandy Alderson confirmed that the Toronto Blue Jays and one other American League East team had made inquiries about Henderson’s availability. The trading deadline is midnight tonight.
“There is a possibility of something happening between now and (Saturday) night but the chances are not greater than 50-50,” Alderson said.
Philadelphia pitcher Tommy Greene was put on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to Wednesday because of a strained right groin, the Phillies said.
Greene, 12-3 with a 3.38 ERA, injured the groin against the Dodgers on July 21 and aggravated it Tuesday night against the St. Louis Cardinals. . . .Colorado Rockie pitcher Jeff Parrett said he will have elbow surgery to repair a detached ligament “as soon as possible” and hopes to resume throwing about Nov. 1. Parrett’s season ended when he learned he had a detached ligament, which was why he was removed from Wednesday night’s game against the Atlanta Braves.
