A 68-yard scoring pass from Wade Wilson to Frank Wainright, a 79-yard punt return by rookie Tyrone Hughes and three key fumble recoveries carried the New Orleans Saints to a 28-16 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles in their exhibition opener at Tokyo.

Fumble recoveries by Renaldo Turnbull and rookie Pete Shufelt set up touchdowns, and one by rookie Rick Dolly halted a Philadelphia drive at the Saint five.

Philadelphia managed only one touchdown--set up by one of three interceptions of quarterback Mike Buck--and three field goals.

Running back Rodney Hampton has ended a 13-day holdout and reported to the New York Giants’ training camp with expectations of getting a new contract. Hampton, faced with $52,000 in fines, was to make $425,000 this season but wants to be paid about $1.7 million, or about the average of the NFL’s top five running backs. . . . Dave Wannstedt, the new coach of the Chicago Bears, wants offensive lineman Keith Van Horne in camp, and the club has told the veteran if he doesn’t report Monday the current offer of $1 million for one season may be reduced. . . . American Bowl officials are expecting about 35,000 fans for today’s game in Barcelona between the San Francisco 49ers and Pittsburgh Steelers, the first NFL game in Spain.
