Fire Guts Apartment in Canoga Park
A fire that may have been caused by a burning cigarette gutted an apartment Sunday on the top floor of a three-story apartment building in Canoga Park, authorities said.
Los Angeles city firefighters battled the blaze in the 7000 block of Vassar Avenue for about 30 minutes before gaining control of the fire. Barbara Lane, who manages the apartment complex, said the fire started in a bedroom. No injuries were reported in the fire, which was confined to one three-bedroom apartment.
Los Angeles Fire Department Battalion Chief Richard Jioras said the cause of the blaze was still under investigation. The fire caused an estimated $35,000 in structural damage and another $7,000 in property loss, Jioras said.
