AMERICAN LEAGUE ROUNDUP : White Leads Blue Jays With One Last Blast, 4-0

Devon White ended his duties as Toronto’s leadoff hitter Monday night in memorable fashion, breaking up a scoreless duel between Todd Stottlemyre and Jim Abbott with a two-run homer as the Blue Jays defeated the Yankees, 4-0, at New York.

White, who will yield the No. 1 spot in the lineup when Rickey Henderson arrives today, homered in the sixth inning before Joe Carter sealed the victory with a two-run homer in the ninth.

The victory gave Toronto a two-game lead over both New York and Boston in the American League East and dropped the Yankees into third place.

“It’s not a matter of pride or ego,” White said of giving up his leadoff role to Henderson. “That’s where he deserves to be. He does everything a leadoff hitter should.”

Besides his homer, White had a single and stolen base.

“Rickey can top that any day of the week,” he said.

Texas 9, Chicago 8--Pinch-runner Manuel Lee capped a hitless ninth-inning rally by scoring on a wild pitch as the Rangers won at Arlington, Tex., ending the White Sox’ six-game winning streak.

With one out, Jeff Schwarz (2-2) walked Julio Franco, and Lee came in to pinch run. Scott Radinsky relieved and walked pinch hitter John Russell. Donn Pall replaced Radinsky and got Dean Palmer on a ground out to first base, moving the runners up. Pall’s wild pitch, on a 1-1 count on Doug Strange, scored Lee.

Baltimore 7, Milwaukee 5--Jeff Tackett, a late-inning replacement for injured catcher Chris Hoiles, singled home the go-ahead run in the seventh inning to lift the Orioles at Baltimore.
