Vince Coleman, the New York Met outfielder accused of throwing an explosive device that injured three fans outside Dodger Stadium, will be arraigned today and surrender at that time.

Coleman was to surrender to authorities Tuesday but changed plans because of the glut of reporters waiting for him at a police station in Van Nuys.

“He will surrender at arraignment at the criminal courts building tomorrow. That’s our understanding,” said Phil Wierter, a fire department spokesman.

Reporters in Van Nuys were told of the switch in Coleman’s plans less than an hour before the announced time of surrender.

Coleman’s attorney, Robert Shapiro, would not say how he will plead at the arraignment on a charge of unlawful possession of an explosive device.

Pitcher Bret Saberhagen apologized for his “practical joke” gone astray after being identified by the New York Mets as the player who sprayed bleach on two reporters on July 27.

The team said Saberhagen will contribute one day’s pay, $15,384.62, to a charity or charities designated by the New York chapter of the Baseball Writers Assn. of America.

Saberhagen, on the disabled list after knee surgery this week, also will miss a period to be determined when he returns from his injury in about a month.

He had denied spraying the bleach and threw a clubhouse tantrum Friday night after learning the Mets had completed an investigation of the matter.

Robin Ventura of the Chicago White Sox was suspended for two games for charging the mound and fighting Texas Ranger pitcher Nolan Ryan on Aug. 4.

Ventura, contending Ryan, 46, was throwing at him, appealed the suspension by Bobby Brown, American League president. Ryan was not punished.

Ventura, 26, charged Ryan after being hit by a pitch. Ryan grabbed him in a headlock and punched him a half dozen times. Ventura was ejected and Ryan stayed in the game and earned the victory.
