County Enforces Policy of ‘No Shots, No School’

The Los Angeles County Department of Health Services reminds parents and guardians that children entering school for the first time in September are required by law to have up-to-date immunization records.

“All public and private schools and child-care centers throughout the county will be enforcing the ‘No shots, no school’ policy,” said Dr. Laurence Mascola, chief of acute communicable disease control.

Schoolchildren are required to have at least four DTP (diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis) shots, three doses of oral polio vaccine and one combined MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) shot. At least one dose of Hib meningitis vaccine is recommended for 2- to 4-year-olds entering child-care centers this year. Hib meningitis vaccine will be required in 1994.

Children entering school for the first time are also required to have a Mantoux skin test for tuberculosis.

Immunization and tuberculosis skin tests are free at all county-operated health centers. Parents and guardians are to contact their physician or a local county health center for information.
