Share

Four candidates--the mayor and three challengers--are vying for two Walnut City Council seats in the Nov. 2 election.

Elected in 1989, Mayor William T. Choctaw, 45, will seek reelection to his four-year seat. Mayor Pro Tem Drexel L. Smith, who has spent three four-year terms on the council and was planning commissioner before that, will not seek reelection.

The three challengers are June Wentworth, a planning commissioner; Mei Mei Ho-Hilger, a certified public accountant, and Darlene Kellogg, 51, a client specialist with Mt. San Antonio College’s Small Business Development Center.

A 27-year Walnut resident and the mother of six, Kellogg has been involved in several Walnut youth organizations. She says she has a strong interest in the future of youths in Walnut.

Ho-Hilger, who says she is “the one candidate with the training to manage (Walnut’s) tax dollars,” is chairwoman of the Walnut Mayor’s Economic Development Advisory Cabinet and is director of the Chinese Assn. of Walnut.

Wentworth, who sits on the Walnut Business Assistance Committee and is treasurer of the Walnut Historical Society, says she wants to protect Walnut’s open space and rural environment.
