De La Hoya, Nunez in Main Event
In a ballroom usually reserved for more genteel activities, unbeaten Oscar De La Hoya is featured in the main event of tonight’s charity fight card at the Beverly Wilshire hotel.
The event, which includes fights involving four other members of the United States’ 1992 Olympic team, benefits the “Knockout Diabetes” organization.
De La Hoya, whose last Los Angeles fight was in January--six bouts ago--faces Angelo Nunez. De La Hoya has a 9-0 record with eight knockouts; Nunez is 10-4-3 with two knockouts.
For De La Hoya, tonight’s 10-round bout is a rare opportunity to fight in front of his home crowd on free television. Channel 13 is sponsoring and airing the fight and the preliminary bouts, beginning at 8. De La Hoya’s next scheduled bouts are Oct. 30 in Phoenix and Dec. 30 in Las Vegas.
The rest of the card: Olympian Larry Donald (7-0) vs. Mike Gans (11-11-1), Olympian Montell Griffin (6-0) vs. Ka-dy King (5-0), Olympian Larry Dixon (3-0) vs. Steve Von Schert (2-1-1), and Olympian Vernon Forrest (5-0) vs. Gary Moore (10-4).
