COLLEGE FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE NATION : Huskies’ Lambright Signs Four-Year Pact
Jim Lambright, a longtime Washington assistant, received a four-year contract Thursday to succeed Don James as Washington football coach.
Athletic Director Barbara Hedges said Lambright will receive a base salary of $150,000. He was being paid $95,400 as James’ chief assistant.
“This is extremely pleasing for me,” Lambright said. “From the standpoint of having a four-year contract, being able to carry that to the players and eventually pass that on to the most critical part of my program, which will be maintaining an excellent recruiting approach.”
On Sunday, Washington was hit with a two-year bowl ban by the Pacific 10 Conference for NCAA rules violations. James resigned to protest the severity of the penalties.
Lambright, 51, succeeded James on Sunday, but the length of his contract was not determined. Hedges had to speak with the school’s president, William Gerberding, who was in Colorado.
Lambright spent the last 15 seasons as James’ defensive coordinator.
