A 3 1/2-year-old boy died Monday in a fire that quickly engulfed an Arleta trailer home, authorities said.
The small, single-room trailer located in the 9800 block of Sharp Avenue was destroyed in less than 15 minutes, said Jim Wells, a Los Angeles City Fire Department spokesman.
The child’s mother told firefighters she had stepped outside the trailer to perform some household chores, and turned around to see smoke and flames coming from the 25-foot-long trailer, Wells said.
The mother was unable to re-enter the structure because of the smoke and flames, Wells said.
“When we arrived, the structure was totally involved, everything was burning,” Wells said.
Five people lived in the trailer, but only the little boy was inside at the time of the fire, which is still under investigation, Wells said.
