Greg Hill, Texas A&M;’s leading rusher, was suspended for Saturday’s nonconference game against Louisiana State, but the Aggies did not miss him.

Rodney Thomas gained 201 yards in 25 carries and Leeland McElroy caught touchdown passes of 26 and 58 yards, helping No. 5 Texas A&M; to a 24-0 victory at College Station, Tex.

Hill was one of five players suspended for accepting pay for work on summer jobs they didn’t perform.

Arkansas 10, Southern Methodist 6--Oscar Malone’s one-yard touchdown dive with 39 seconds left at Dallas gave Coach Danny Ford a victory in his return to coaching.

EAST

Marvin Graves passed for three touchdowns at Syracuse, N.Y., to carry No. 6 Syracuse to a 35-12 victory over Ball State. . . . Maurice DeShazo completed 16 of 21 passes for 214 yards and two touchdowns as Virginia Tech beat Bowling Green, 33-16, at Blacksburg, Va.

Rutgers defeated Division I-AA Colgate, 68-6, at East Rutherford, N.J. The point total was the most by Rutgers since a 69-0 victory over Columbia in 1978.

ATLANTIC COAST

Leon Johnson gained 147 and scored two touchdowns, and Curtis Johnson rushed for 144 yards and a touchdown as No. 16 North Carolina beat Ohio, 44-3, in a nonconference game at Chapel Hill, N.C. . . . Charles Way scored three touchdowns, leading Virginia to a 43-29 Atlantic Coast Conference victory over Maryland at College Park, Md.

WESTERN ATHLETIC

John Walsh passed for four touchdowns in No. 19 Brigham Young’s 34-31 victory over New Mexico before 33,659 at Albuquerque, the largest crowd ever to watch a football game in New Mexico. . . . Jake Campbell scored three touchdowns to lead Air Force to a 62-21 nonconference victory over Indiana State at Colorado Springs, Colo.

BIG WEST

Louisville defeated San Jose State, 31-24, in a nonconference game at Louisville, Ky., spoiling the return of San Jose State’s John Ralston, who hadn’t coached a college game since he led Stanford to the 1971 Rose Bowl. . . . Patrick Sapp completed 10 of 14 passes for 194 yards and two touchdowns, leading No. 22 Clemson to a 24-14 nonconference victory over Nevada Las Vegas at Clemson, S.C.

Byron Morris scored three touchdowns in Texas Tech’s 55-7 nonconference victory over Pacific at Lubbock, Tex. . . . Anthony Calvillo passed for 362 yards, and Utah State’s secondary intercepted six passes in a 34-13 Big West Conference victory over Southwestern Louisiana at Lafayette, La.
