A Harbor City man was stabbed in the neck, chest and stomach Sunday night during a heavy-metal concert at the Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre, raising new concern about security measures at the popular venue, police and city officials said Monday.

Phillip Delarosa, 23, was listed in guarded condition at a local hospital after the 11 p.m. attack during a concert by the group Anthrax, said Irvine Police Sgt. Tom Hume. It was the second such incident in two years at the amphitheater when Anthrax performed.

Witnesses to Delarosa’s stabbing tried to capture the assailant, but he escaped after becoming lost in the crowd, according to Irvine police, who declined to release further details while the investigation continues. Hospital officials also declined to release any information.

Irvine City Councilwoman Christina L. Shea and City Manager Paul O. Brady Jr. said Monday they are concerned about the violent outbreak at the popular concert spot and hope to find ways to prevent similar problems in the future.

“That’s very troubling,” said Shea, who said she did not yet have all the details of the case but questioned whether stricter security could have prevented the stabbing. “We need to have much more control. I would like to have better checks on people coming in with weapons or whatever.”

Matthew Curto, vice president of operations for the amphitheater, said Monday he could not comment on the incident.

Brady said he anticipates city officials will sit down with amphitheater representatives to discuss the incident. Brady said it was too soon to say whether Anthrax should join the Grateful Dead on a list of forbidden entertainers at the amphitheater.

“Any time there is a problem like this, the best thing to do is sit down with ownership and discuss the problem,” he said. “It’s really hard to pass judgment on music, to say that one type of music passes but not another. You can’t be prudish, but you can’t have a group that attracts certain types of people who will be getting into fights. We have to address the problem.”

Brady said he would like to know whether drugs or alcohol were involved and what led up to the stabbing--details that police did not release Monday.

The Irvine City Council cannot control amphitheater bookings, but amphitheater officials agreed to City Council requests to ban the Grateful Dead after an unruly crowd turned on police and security during a 1989 concert.

In October, 1991, two brothers were stabbed in the chest after a dispute in a parking lot after a concert at Irvine Meadows by Anthrax and rap group Public Enemy.

In March, 1992, two people received emergency medical treatment after heavy metal rocker Ozzy Osbourne urged concert-goers to rush the stage at Irvine Meadows.

Other city council members could not be reached for comment.

Former Irvine Mayor Sally Anne Sheridan said violence is not a major problem at the amphitheater, where security is generally good. But Sheridan said the city should consider banning individual groups that attract a violent following.

“When you consider the number of people who go there, and the number of problems, this kind of thing does not happen very often,” Sheridan said. “Could more have been done? I’m sure. But generally speaking, security there is very good, and I think the management there hates this kind of thing more than we do.”
