Retired pathologist Jack Kevorkian was ordered by a state judge Thursday to be tried on charges of violating the state’s new ban on assisted suicide when he helped a man with Lou Gehrig’s disease end his life.

District Judge Willie G. Lipscomb Jr. praised Kevorkian, 65, as “very courageous” but rejected his argument that the law was unconstitutional.

Kevorkian’s arraignment was set for Sept. 24. If convicted, he could be sentenced to four years in prison and a $2,000 fine.
