Eric Davis homered twice, backing the two-hit pitching of Mike Moore and leading the Detroit Tigers to a 4-0 victory over the Chicago White Sox at Chicago on Friday night.

The White Sox, who lead the American League West, lost for the third time in four games and their advantage over the Texas Rangers was cut to 3 1/2 games after the Rangers swept a doubleheader against the Minnesota Twins.

Davis, who is 10 for 28 with three homers and six runs batted in since being traded from the Dodgers on Aug. 31, robbed Ellis Burks of a homer when he jumped near the 400-foot mark in the second inning.

“The way things were going in L.A., it was a job,” Davis said. “I wasn’t having any fun. Now I’m having fun and you have to have fun in this game.”

Texas 4-3, Minnesota 3-2--Juan Gonzalez tied a team record with his 43rd home run in the second game as the Rangers swept at Arlington, Texas.

Tom Henke, who earned a career-high 35th save in the opener, also got a save in the second game.

Dave Winfield of the Twins went 0 for four in the first game, leaving him four hits shy of 3,000. He didn’t play in the second game.

Kansas City 6, New York 5--Mike Macfarlane homered and Chico Lind hit a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning at Kansas City as the Royals knocked the Yankees out of a first-place tie with the Toronto Blue Jays in the AL East.

The Yankees, who have lost their last four games, fell one game behind the Blue Jays.

Jim Abbott, making his first start since pitching a no-hitter against Cleveland last weekend, gave up 10 hits in seven innings.
