To hear Chris Shinnick tell it, he had just endured the worst football game of his career.

“My hip was really bothering me and I threw up twice,” Shinnick said as he hoisted a soiled uniform and shoulder pads over his sweat-drenched head.

But make no mistake. Shinnick had the game of his life, scoring a career-best four touchdowns to lead El Camino Real High to a 49-14 victory over North Hollywood in a nonleague game Wednesday.

The Huskies (1-1) had a tough time contending with Shinnick on both sides of the ball.

Shinnick, a 5-foot-11, 193-pound senior, rushed for 180 yards in 20 carries and scored on runs of two, four and 21 yards. He also caught half of quarterback Ryan Venturine’s six completed passes for 57 yards.

And there was no escaping Shinnick when the Huskies had the ball, either. Shinnick, a defensive back, intercepted two passes, returning his first one 78 yards for a touchdown, which gave the Conquistadores a 35-14 lead three seconds before halftime.

Both teams played only five days before and Shinnick was still recovering from a nagging hip-pointer he suffered last week during the Conquistadores’ victory over Chaminade.

“I wasn’t exactly healthy--let’s put it that way,” said Shinnick, who couldn’t explain vomiting twice on the sideline after his second touchdown.

But, with Shinnick as dominating a player as he tends to be, it’s easy to understand why El Camino Real co-Coach Mike Maio kept him in the game until late in the fourth quarter.

“I think (his performance) speaks for itself,” Maio said.

North Hollywood, which features a run-and-shoot offense, took itself out of the game early with offensive miscues. The Huskies were hampered by six turnovers, including three in the first quarter.

North Hollywood quarterback Alvaro Castillo picked apart the Conquistadores’ secondary in the Huskies’ opening drive. Alvaro completed four of his first six passes (one was dropped) in the 74-yard advance and capped it by hitting Patrick Fields for six yards less than three minutes into the game for a 6-0 lead.

In contrast, Venturine, who completed six of 15 passes for the Conquistadores, started slowly. Fields picked off a Venturine pass intended for Michael Cooper on El Camino Real’s fourth offensive play at the North Hollywood 27.

After Castillo’s 26-yard pass to Ryan Jones took North Hollywood across midfield, the quarterback threw two incomplete passes and then the first of his three first-half interceptions.

“When (the run-and-shoot) is working, it’s beautiful to watch, but it can get real ugly when it doesn’t click,” North Hollywood Coach Gary Gray said.

El Camino Real (2-0) scored touchdowns on four consecutive possessions following North Hollywood’s first turnover to take a 28-6 lead.

Castillo, who completed 10 of 22 for 156 yards before leaving early in the third quarter with an ankle injury, connected with Fields for a 20-yard touchdown to make it 28-14 with 1:32 left in the first half, but Shinnick’s touchdown return seconds later seemed to take the life out of the Huskies for good.
