‘Don’t Go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me: An Eye Opening Guide to Brand Name Cosmetics’

Share

Author: Paula Begoun.

Info: Beginning Press, 1991. $10.50 paperback. 220 pages includes a list of cruelty-free cosmetics brands and a list of those that continue to test on animals or contract with those who do.

Despite the hyperbolic title, it won’t take much browsing to persuade you it’s true. Begoun addresses everything from “the crazy things salespeople say” to ingredients for beauty and skin care products--and which you do (or don’t) need for dry, oily or sensitive skin. Up-to-date topics include a Retin-A report, a skin care update, and a look at TV cosmetics shows. Begoun even understands that some people shop for cosmetics in department stores and that others just go to drugstores.

Thirty major manufacturers of makeup and skin-care products are dissected, scrutinized and evaluated in a review of which eye shadows and blushes are too shiny and blue, which foundations too orange or pink; which ingredients can cause acne; which mascaras smear, clump or don’t come off easily; which compacts and other containers are the most troublesome; which products are best for women of color, and which moisturizers and wrinkle creams don’t live up to their claims or price tags.
