Multiply power by power, and the result can devastate an opponent.

With fifth-ranked Irvine doing the math in a nonleague game Friday night against host Mission Viejo, the Vaqueros scored high--a 35-7 victory--on the test.

For a good part of the night, all the Diablos (1-1) could do was recoil in horror as Irvine ran, passed, sacked, intercepted and did everything on the field but slam dunk.

So effective was Irvine (2-0) in the first half, the Vaqueros scored on their first four possessions before the clock ran out during their fifth.

“Everything they did worked,” Mission Viejo Coach Marty Spalding said.

He wasn’t kidding.

Irvine quarterback Mike Phelps was, well, perfect, before he left the game midway through the third quarter. Phelps completed 10 of 10 passes for 194 yards and two touchdowns, with 141 of those yards coming in the first half.

Not to be outdone, teammate Tony Mathis proved his debut a week ago--he scored four touchdowns against Esperanza--was no fluke. Mathis, who was taken out of the game early in the fourth, rushed for 108 yards on 16 carries and scored three touchdowns.

And there’s more.

Receiver Geoff Noisy caught seven passes, including touchdown grabs of 12 and 10 yards. The first scoring catch gave Irvine a 7-0 lead and the second made it 35-0 midway through the third quarter.

Irvine admitted there was a touch of extra motivation Friday. Last year, the Diablos won the faceoff, 14-0, before the Vaqueros went on a 12-game victory tear.

“We worked really hard for this,” said Mathis. “We talked about what happened last year, when we came out flat.”

The only thing flat Friday was Mission Viejo, which had 32 yards passing and 43 rushing in the first half. Things brightened up a bit for the Diablos in the second half, but they were shades of sunshine.

Mission Viejo’s first three drives of the second half ended in disaster: Quarterback Brad Weekes threw an interception on first and 17 at the Irvine 29, quarterback Todd Reinhart fumbled on first-and 10 on the Irvine 22, and Reinhart threw an interception early in the fourth.

But the Diablos redeemed themselves for a moment with 2:14 left in the fourth when they gambled on fourth-and-eight from Irvine’s 23. Reinhart connected with Jeff Williams to avoid the shutout.

“Tonight we were good,” Irvine Coach Terry Henigan said.

Spalding agreed: “They’re that much better than us.”
