COLLEGE FOOTBALL : Quarterback Carter Leads Hawaii Over Kent

Michael Carter passed for four touchdowns and ran for another Saturday night to power slow-starting Hawaii to a 49-17 victory over Kent.

Carter had scoring passes of 17 yards to John Veneri, 14 to Cy Hirota and 48 and 11 to Brian Gordon. He scored on an 11-yard run as Hawaii improved to 2-1.

Kent (0-3) has been outscored this season, 126-24.

After a scoreless first quarter, Hawaii took a 14-3 lead at the half on scoring passes from Carter to Veneri and Hirota.

The second score set the tone for the Rainbows’ quick-strike offense. They got the ball on their 23 with 41 seconds left in the half and covered 77 yards in five plays and 35 seconds.

Hawaii then scored on five of its first six possessions in the second half with drives taking 58 seconds (64 yards), 42 seconds (41 yards), 2:51 (66 yards), 48 seconds (four yards) and 2:45 (58 yards).

Carter got the third-quarter scoring started with his 11-yard run and followed with his two touchdown passes to Gordon.

After Carter suffered a minor leg injury in the fourth quarter, Ivin Jasper scored on a four-yard run and Tupu Alualu capped the scoring with a one-yard plunge with 5:15 to play.

Carter completed 10 of 16 passes for 199 yards and rushed 20 times for 86 yards. Gordon caught four passes for 90 yards, with Veneri catching three for 80 yards.
