The Florida Marlins on Wednesday claimed right-handed pitcher Javier Delahoya, who had been waived by the Dodgers.

Delahoya pitched for San Antonio of the Texas League in 1993, posting an 8-10 record and 107 strikeouts in 125 1/3 innings.

Delahoya, a Grant High graduate and former Times’ All-Valley pitcher, was placed on the 40-man roster but won’t report to the club this season, the Marlins said.

Ruben Oronoz, a Cal State Northridge recruit, will undergo surgery on a herniated disk in his back and is expected to miss the season, Matador coaches said Wednesday.

Oronoz, a 6-foot-7 junior, has experienced stiffness in his back since playing for Rancho Santiago College last season. Doctors at first believed he was suffering from a strained muscle, but a magnetic resonance imaging test this summer divulged a more serious problem.

Mike Johnson, a Northridge assistant, said Oronoz will have surgery once an insurance company agrees to accept the claim.
