PREP ROUNDUP : Laguna Beach Wins Big Match in Girls’ Tennis

The Laguna Beach girls’ tennis team won a battle of top-ranked defending champions Wednesday, defeating North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake, 10-8, at Alta Laguna Park.

Laguna Beach (4-2) won the Southern Section Division II title. Harvard-Westlake (4-1) won the Division III championship.

Michelle Bray beat Alicia Schoenberg, 6-4, in the decisive set. She won her other two sets, 6-1, 6-4. Ashley Smith and Tara Kuhnert won two of their three doubles sets. They won, 7-5, 6-3, but lost, 7-6 (7-5 in the tiebreaker).

In nonleague tennis:

Esperanza 12, La Quinta 6--Esperanza defeated La Quinta at home behind the doubles play of Brooke Atwell and Jill Llewellyn. The pair swept their doubles matches, 6-2, 6-2, 6-2, to push their overall record to 8-1.

Edison 9, Los Alamitos 9 (Edison wins on games, 79-71)--Nicole Kojima won her singles sets, 6-1, 6-0, 6-1, for visiting Edison (4-2).

El Toro 10, Foothill 8--Kate Kunath swept in singles, 7-5, 6-2, 6-0, and Janaye Johnson won, 6-3, 6-3, 6-0, to lead visiting El Toro (2-2).

El Modena 16, Santiago 2--Brandi Freudenberg won her singles sets, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, sister Holli Freudenberg won, 6-0, 6-4, 6-0, and Amy Medlin won, 6-0, 6-1, 6-0, to lead El Modena (4-0). Santiago is 4-1.

Katella 10, Fullerton 8--Kristen Sakamoto, a freshman singles player, lost only two games to lead Katella.

Westminster 12, Magnolia 6--Judy Esmero swept in singles, 6-2, 6-0, 6-2, and Kenesay Ou and Nadia Jaser won in doubles, 6-4, 6-2, 6-0, for host Westminster (2-3).

Mater Dei 13, Marina 5--Laura Ruben remained unbeaten, winning, 6-2, 6-1, 6-0, to lead the Monarchs (5-0). Marina’s doubles team of Heidi Harper and Audrey Evangelista won, 6-1, 6-3, 6-1.

In nonleague volleyball:

Irvine 3, Estancia 0--Lindsay Jones had 15 kills and Kelly Webb had seven to lead Irvine (3-2), which won, 15-7, 15-9, 16-14. Julia Schnuistein had 10 kills for Estancia (1-2).

Laguna Beach 3, El Toro 0--Hilary Kyle had 16 kills and four aces for the Artists (1-1), who won, 15-7, 15-9, 15-4.

In Sea View League water polo:

Newport Harbor 15, Saddleback 8--Brad Pence scored seven goals and Gabe Wyatt added four for host Newport Harbor (1-1, 1-0).

Woodbridge 16, Santa Margarita 13--Woodbridge’s Chris Talbot had eight goals and goalie Matt Simmons stopped 10 shots for host Woodbridge.
