PREP ROUNDUP : Hay’s Goal in Overtime Gives Foothill a Water Polo Victory

David Hay scored in the second overtime period to give Foothill an 8-7 victory over Sunny Hills in the second round of the South Coast water polo tournament Thursday at Heritage Park in Irvine.

Hay, who had five goals in the game, also scored the tying goal on a penalty shot with 15 seconds left in regulation. Foothill (3-2) is ranked fifth in Orange County. Sunny Hills is ranked sixth.

In other second-round games of the South Coast tournament:

Corona del Mar 12, Marina 7--James Palda and Neil Hueston each scored four goals to lead top-ranked Corona del Mar (4-0). The Sea Kings, who beat La Canada, 14-3, in the first round, led, 11-2, after three quarters.

El Toro 13, Servite 7--Brent Stoll scored three goals to lead El Toro, ranked second in the county.

Newport Harbor 9, Esperanza 7--Mike Diggrucio, Jeremy Yonches, Gabe Wyatt and Brad Tence each had two goals for No. 4 Newport Harbor (4-0).

In Century League boys’ cross-country:

Orange 28, Villa Park 29--Jaime Martinez of Orange broke his course record at Eisenhower Park, covering three miles in 15 minutes 21 seconds to lead host Orange (2-0). His old mark was 15:45. Villa Park’s Jeremy Mordock was second in 15:53.

In Empire League boys’ cross-country:

Esperanza 19, El Dorado 43--Esperanza’s Steven Walsh ran past El Dorado’s Steven Lefebvre to win by one second in 16:52 at Tri-City Park. Lefebvre had taken the lead with about 1 1/2 miles to go, but Walsh passed him on a hill before the finish.

In Sea View League boys’ cross-country:

Santa Margarita 21, Newport Harbor 37--Matt Huss and Ryan Wilkinson finished first and second in 15:28 and 15:30 for Santa Margarita in a double dual meet at Bonita Creek Park. Santa Margarita also beat University, 19-41.

In Garden Grove League girls’ tennis:

Pacifica 9, Bolsa Grande 9 (Pacifica wins on games)--Twin sisters Lindsay and Colleen Morris remained undefeated at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-0, 6-2, and 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, to lead Pacifica (2-2, 1-2).

In the Sea View League:

Woodbridge 10, University 8--Woodbridge freshman Natalie Exon, who has won 19 of 22 singles sets this season, swept her sets, 6-3, 6-1, 6-2. Liz Adcock and Ali Tenerelli swept in doubles, 6-4, 6-2, 6-0, for Woodbridge (6-1, 2-1).

In nonleague play:

Palos Verdes Peninsula 14, Dana Hills 4--Led by the Basica sisters, Amber and Amanda, Peninsula (5-0), top-ranked in the Southern Section Division I, beat the Dolphins (4-1). Elizabeth Stevens won the only singles set for Dana Hills, beating Amber Basica, 6-4.

In Sea View League girls’ volleyball:

University 3, Woodbridge 2-- Ashleigh Cross had 18 kills and nine aces to lead University (2-2, 1-1), which won 14-16, 5-15, 15-9, 15-5, 15-9.
