A 39-year-old father of five was fatally shot Friday when he confronted a man who had shot and wounded his dog in Southwest Los Angeles, police said.

Transito Velado had been looking for his German shepherd, which had slipped out of the yard of his house at 62nd Street and Menlo Avenue, “when he heard some shots and the dog came slinking back to the house,” said Lt. Sergio Robleto.

Witnesses pointed to where the shots had come from, and Velado went outside and confronted an armed man, Robleto said.

“The confrontation was only verbal, and Transito turned to walk away,” Robleto said. “But the suspect opened up with several shots, and one hit him in the head.”

Some of Velado’s children discovered him lying in the street. They fetched their mother who, with a neighbor, gave Velado CPR until an ambulance arrived, Robleto said. He was pronounced dead shortly afterward at an Inglewood hospital.

Police had not apprehended a suspect by late Friday.
