Whittier La Serna scored 17 points in the final 4 minutes 17 seconds of the first half, and went on to beat Bolsa Grande, 37-14, Friday night at California High.

Matt Fristoe passed 14 yards to Andy George to open the scoring. George caught five passes for 104 yards.

Mike Stocz then scored on a 40-yard pass from Mike Hale. Stocz seemed to be stopped at the 30, but broke away and ran untouched into the end zone. The 5-foot-11, 200-pound junior led the Lancers in rushing, with 64 yards in 10 carries.

Donnie Gunritz, on the first play after the touchdown, intercepted a pass from Brian Baughman.

Brian Bennie kicked a 37-yard field goal with no time remaining in the first half.

Bolsa Grande (1-2) was outgained in the first half, 181 yards to 43. The Matadores had minus-17 yards rushing.

Things didn’t get any better for Bolsa Grande in the second half.

The Matadores took the third-quarter kickoff and drove to La Serna’s five-yard line, but stalled. A field-goal attempt failed.

Two plays later, Tony Alcorn intercepted a pass and returned it 21 yards to the Lancers’ 30. But Bolsa Grande fumbled a few plays afterward, and La Serna’s Paul Gonzalez recovered.

La Serna then put the game away with a 10-play, 70-yard drive that culminated in a 16-yard pass from Fristoe to Stocz.

The first play after the kickoff, Paul Bernal stripped Baughman of the ball. Gonzalez picked it up and ran 20 yards for the score. Baughman was sacked five times.
