Abalone Cove in Rancho Palos Verdes will be the site of a beach cleanup Saturday sponsored by the environmental group Heal the Bay and the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy.

Participants will hear naturalists talk about the history of the cove, the marine population in the protected tide pools and how landslides in the 1970s reshaped the area.

Cleanup volunteers are advised to wear old, washable clothing, sneakers, and gloves. Trash bags will be provided. Volunteers will receive a Heal the Bay canvas tote bag, certificates for a free pint of Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream and a discount coupon to Heal the Bay’s Endless Summer Beach Party at the Santa Monica Pier after the cleanup.

The beach party, where KNBC-TV weatherman Fritz Coleman acts as host, will take place from noon to 10 p.m. and features live entertainment.

Environmentalists have said beaches along the peninsula are strewn with a lot of debris because mechanical litter sweepers cannot be used on the rocky shoreline.

During last year’s cleanup, Heal the Bay said, 50 volunteers collected 133 pounds of trash and 90 pounds of recyclable items from Abalone Cove.

Cleanups also will be held at Cabrillo Beach, Malaga Cove, Royal Palms Beach at White Point and Point Fermin Park. In all, Heal the Bay is organizing cleanups at 30 Los Angeles area beaches Saturday.
