Anaheim’s Droughns Dominates Cypress

Reuben Droughns did more in one half Friday night than most running backs do in two weeks.

The Anaheim sophomore rushed for 247 first-half yards and three touchdowns on 13 carries to lead the Colonists to a 31-7 nonleague victory over Cypress at Glover Stadium.

Droughns, who finished with 253 yards on 14 carries, has rushed for 790 yards in four games and is averaging more than eight yards per carry.

“The whole team wanted it, and we showed it,” said Droughns, who scored on runs of 57, four and 33 yards. “I can’t do it without the line.”

The offensive line of Anaheim (3-1), particularly left tackle Roy Navarette and left guard Damion Marquez, consistently dominated the line of scrimmage, enabling Droughns to weave through the Cypress (0-4) secondary.

Droughns got started early, taking a handoff from quarterback Jaime Carlos 57 yards for his first touchdown. He burst through the middle, then outran Cypress safety Elden Leggett to the end zone.

After a Joel Vasquez field goal and a Jake Walker interception, Droughns scored on a four-yard touchdown run for a 17-0 lead.

Then, on what may have been his finest run of the game, he swept left, ran through an attempted tackle, and cruised 50 yards before Joey Meza tackled him at the Cypress four. On the next play, Jaime Nunez scored on a four-yard touchdown run for a 24-0 lead.

“We finally came together as a team,” Anaheim Coach Todd Borowski said. “I hope we play the same way in two weeks (when Orange League play begins).”

Cypress scored its lone touchdown in the third quarter, when Legget caught a nine-yard touchdown pass from David Wheeler.
