PREP ROUNDUP : Santa Ana, Santiago Dominate in Cross-Country

Santa Ana placed three runners in the top five to win the boys’ Division I title Saturday in the Fountain Valley Invitational cross-country meet at Central Park in Huntington Beach.

Federico Duran was second in 15 minutes 21 seconds, Juan Medrano fourth in 15:27 and Federico Morales fifth in 15:31 for Santa Ana, which scored 26 points to rout second-place Del Campo (106). Mater Dei was third with 107 points. Conrad Knutsen of Del Campo won in 15:15.

Santiago won the boys’ Division III race, also placing three in the top five to score 25 points to 58 for San Diego.

Huntington Beach finished third in Division II, behind winner Thousand Oaks, which ran away with a near-perfect 19 points. Brandon Del Campo of Thousand Oaks ran a course-record 14:53 for the individual title.

In the girls’ competition, Mater Dei won the Division I team race with 72 points to 87 for Fountain Valley and 128 for Saddleback.

Aliso Niguel edged Laguna Beach, 45-46, for the girls’ Division III title. Kelly Daucher of Brea-Olinda won the individual title in 19:34.

In the Clovis Invitational cross-country meet:

La Habra fifth--Jeff Domis and Chuck Gatchell led the Highlanders in the boys’ large school race at Fresno, each covering the 3.1 miles in 16 minutes 18 seconds to finish seventh and eighth at Woodward Park. La Habra finished with 144 points to 52 for meet champion Madera. Carl Daucher led Brea-Olinda to seventh, finishing in 16:53.

In eight-man football:

Liberty Christian 33, Widomar California Lutheran 20--Quarterback Carl Warmack threw for 240 yards and four touchdowns for Liberty Christian.

Dave Vacarro, who plays offense and defense, compiled 200 yards running and receiving and scored four touchdowns, three on receptions and one on an interception return.

In nonleague water polo:

El Toro 16, Poway 8--Brandon Stout scored five goals, all in the first half, as top-ranked El Toro built a 9-1 lead. Brad Kalorov scored three goals for Poway.
