A 21-year-old Huntington Beach man was in critical but guarded condition Sunday after a car he was working under slipped off its jacks and landed on top of him, authorities said.

Police said Bradley VanKrugel was repairing a 1968 Chevrolet Nova in the alley behind 321 21st Street about 4:30 p.m. Saturday when the accident occurred.

A passerby, who saw that VanKrugel was pinned, called 911, jacked the car off him, and administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation on VanKrugel until paramedics arrived.

VanKrugel underwent surgery for internal injuries at UCI Medical Center in Orange.

Police said only the rear of the car had been elevated. They were not sure how the car slipped off the jack stands, but noted that the front tires had not been blocked to prevent them from rolling.
