Marshall Faulk rushed for 175 yards and four touchdowns as San Diego State beat fumble-prone Hawaii, 45-14, in a Western Athletic Conference game late Saturday night.

The Aztecs, 4-2 overall and 2-0 in the WAC, held Hawaii (3-3, 1-3) to only 158 yards on the ground, well below its 298-yard average.

Faulk set an NCAA record for rushing average per game against an opponent.

In three games against Hawaii, Faulk has gained 687 yards for a 229-yard average.

Faulk, who ran for 212 yards and five touchdowns against Hawaii as a freshman and 300 yards and four touchdowns last season, could only smile when told it was his worst game against the Rainbows.

“I’m not complaining,” he said.

Faulk’s four touchdowns brought his total against Hawaii to 13, and helped to reassert his claim as the nation’s top running back. Faulk had a slow start this season, gaining 474 yards in the first five games.

His 687 yards against Hawaii breaks the previous record held by Herschel Walker of Georgia, who gained 649 against Florida for a 216.3-yard average.
