Four Cal Poly Pomona freshmen women basketball players were injured, one seriously, in a single-car accident about 9 p.m. Monday night.

Lori Talley, Michaela Ross and twin sisters Tiffany and Taffany Maxwell were injured when their vehicle hit a curb and crashed into a tree on Valley Boulevard in Pomona, near the university’s student housing. They were taken to Pomona Valley Hospital.

Ross suffered a partially collapsed lung, a broken pelvis, a fractured lower vertebrae, a broken right wrist and dislocated and broken toes. She also underwent plastic surgery for severe cuts around her eyes. Ross was in the intensive care unit Tuesday and was transferred yesterday to the Hoag Presbyterian Memorial Hospital in Newport Beach for orthopedic surgery.

Tiffany Maxwell’s right arm was broken in six places and a cut on her leg required 40 stitches. Taffany Maxwell suffered a broken bone below the left eye.

Talley suffered a severely sprained wrist and cuts from the windshield. She was released Monday evening.

“The car just jerked and I lost control,” Talley said. “That’s all I remember.”
