ARROWHEAD LEAGUE FOOTBALL : Southern California Christian Wins Convincingly

Quarterback Boomer Felton threw for one touchdown and ran for another, and Ron Wood ran for two touchdowns Thursday to lead host Southern California Christian to a 38-0 Arrowhead League victory over California School of the Deaf Riverside.

For Flame Coach Bert Esposito, the main concern was getting his team pumped up for the game. CSDR entered the game 0-3, 0-2. SCC (4-1, 3-0) has won the last three meetings between the teams handily.

“At times like this, we have to set our own goals,” Esposito said. “It’s hard to get the team pumped up and ready for the game, but we did our own thing and worked on the fundamentals.”

SCC scored on six of seven possessions, dominating with its running game and defensive line. Utilizing five running backs, the Flames ran for 241 yards.

“Our running game is our forte,” Esposito said. “We will use as many backs as possible because you never know when one will be down. We are not a team of superstars.”

Ken Buhler, in his second varsity game, led the Flames with 100 yards rushing and one touchdown in eight carries. Freshman Anthony Volaria, a transfer from Corona, made an impressive debut, rushing for 52 yards in eight carries.

With the Flames leading, 19-0, in the third quarter, Wood fumbled on the Flames’ 10-yard line. Three plays later, Wood redeemed himself with an interception and a five-yard return to put SCC on its 17. Wood capped the four-play drive with a 10-yard touchdown run.
