Associated Press

An attorney for Barry Sanders says the NFL’s leading rusher will become a free agent at season’s end, but the Detroit Lions insist Sanders is under contract through 1994.

Chuck Schmidt, the Lions’ chief operating officer, called the announcement Friday by Sanders’ attorneys “ridiculous.”

Schmidt has said previously the Lions plan to make Sanders their franchise player after his contract expires, which would keep him in Detroit beyond next season. Lomas Brown is the current franchise player.

Sanders, who makes about $1.7 million per year, is worth more than that and will take his case to the free-agent market, possibly after taking it to court, said his Atlanta attorney, R. David Ware.

Running back Eric Dickerson returned to the Atlanta Falcons’ 53-man roster after failing his physical with the Green Bay Packers. He is expected to retire or be released.
