Doug Gilmour scored three goals and assisted on two others as the undefeated Toronto Maple Leafs ruined goaltender Chris Osgood’s debut with a 6-3 victory over the Detroit Red Wings Friday night at Toronto.

Tim Cheveldae was out because of an injury, Peter Ing has been sent to the minors for conditioning and Vince Riendeau has been benched for demanding to be traded, so Osgood got the call.

Gilmour set up Todd Gill and Bob Rouse in the first period before he scored twice midway through the second. He added an empty-net goal with 1:18 to play. The only goal Gilmour had nothing to do with was Dave Andreychuk’s sixth, late in the second period.

Sergei Fedorov beat Potvin for two goals for the last-place Red Wings, who were expected to be one of the top teams in the Central Division, but are 1-4. Toronto is off to its best start since the end of World War II.

Philadelphia 3, Washington 0--Eric Lindros’ wraparound goal with 16:57 to play broke a scoreless tie, and Dominic Roussel stopped 39 shots at Landover, Md.

The Capitals’ 0-6-0 start is the worst since they opened the 1983-84 season with seven consecutive defeats. Washington has been outscored, 33-14.

Lindros got the game-winner by taking a pass from Mark Recchi. Lindros skated down the right side past defenseman Calle Johansson, then moved around the net before stuffing the puck into the left side.

N.Y. Rangers 5, Buffalo 2--Mike Gartner had two goals and an assist for the Rangers at Buffalo. The Rangers opened a 3-0 lead in the first 7:21 and coasted to their third consecutive victory.

Sergei Nemchinov and Darren Turcotte had the other goals for New York, and Ranger goalie Glenn Healy stopped 15 shots. Buffalo goalie Grant Fuhr was replaced by Dominik Hasek after the Rangers’ fourth goal.
