COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Graff-Ermeling a Record-Setter in GSAC Finals

Genevieve Graff-Ermeling of Concordia broke the women’s course and meet records at the Golden State Athletic Conference cross-country championships Saturday, winning the 5,000-meter individual title in 17 minutes 50.78 seconds at Back Bay in Newport Beach.

Graff-Ermeling broke her course record, 18:17.51, set last week at the Southern California College Invitational. The previous meet record, 18:13, was set by Westmont’s Marie Carmen in 1987.

Guadalupe Ambriz of Point Loma Nazarene was ahead of Graff-Ermeling for most of the race but was passed in the final 200 meters. Ambriz finished in 17:54.

Westmont won the team title with 41 points to 53 for Point Loma and 73 for Azusa Pacific. Southern California College, with Nikee Pool sixth in 19:12.41, was fourth with 94 points, and Concordia was fifth with 116.

Azusa Pacific dominated the men’s race, with the top four finishers, including winner Tony Bergman, who ran 25:39.50 for the 8,000 meters.

Southern California College’s Jason Schaefer was 15th in 26:38.72. Azusa scored 19 points, with Southern California College fourth with 107. Concordia did not score.

In Golden State Athletic Conference men’s soccer:

Southern California College 5, California Baptist 0--Chris Chaparro scored two goals and goalie Brent Rogers recorded the shutout.

In nonconference women’s volleyball:

UC Irvine 3, Davidson 0--Popi Edwards and Jessica Perkins had nine kills apiece as the Anteaters (12-8) won, 15-1, 15-2, 15-11.

In nonconference water polo:

Pepperdine 5, UC Irvine 3--Tim Hornig, with three goals, led No. 8 Pepperdine (6-11) in its upset of No. 5 Irvine (10-7) in Malibu.
