COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Irvine Hangs On to Beat Santa Barbara in Water Polo

UC Irvine failed to score in the fourth quarter but hung on for a 6-5 victory over UC Santa Barbara in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation water polo game Sunday in Santa Barbara.

UC Irvine, the fifth-ranked team in the nation, scored three times in the third quarter to take a 6-4 lead. Kurt Edler, from Newport Harbor High School, scored with 6 minutes 27 seconds left in the third quarter to tie the score, 4-4, for the Anteaters (11-7).

Irvine took a 5-4 lead about two minutes later on a goal by Greg Haynes, formerly of Irvine High. Jean Michel scored in the closing seconds of the third quarter to put Irvine ahead, 6-4.

Edler had a team-high three goals and Mike Rall had six saves for Irvine.

In Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s soccer:

Nevada Las Vegas 2, Cal State Fullerton 1--Noah Gins came off the bench and scored to break a 1-1 tie with about 15 minutes left at Las Vegas.

Fred Partida scored 15 minutes into the second half to tie the score, 1-1, for Cal State Fullerton.

Cal State Northridge 7, UC Irvine 2--Host Northridge led, 2-1, at the half, but scored a season-high five goals in the second half. Armando Valdivia had three goals and three assists and Matt Davis had three goals for Cal State Northridge.

Anthony Russomanno and Mark Kirsch scored for Irvine.

In nonconference women’s soccer:

UCLA 3, UC Irvine 1--Linda Lewis scored in the second half for UC Irvine (9-6).
