Defensive end Shawn Patterson of the Green Bay Packers, who made his way back from reconstructive surgery to both knees, is out for the season and his career in jeopardy after another torn ligament was discovered.

Patterson, who started the first three games and played extensively in the last two, will have his third knee reconstruction on Tuesday.

A torn anterior cruciate ligament was discovered this week, trainer Pepper Burruss said. It is the second time since 1989 that Patterson has torn that ligament in his left knee.

Patterson, 29, sat out last season because of reconstructive surgery on his right knee.

Atlanta and Fulton County officials were surprised when told their governments were expected to pay $300,000 apiece to help finance the 1994 Super Bowl.

A letter sent in July to mayor Maynard H. Jackson, then-Fulton County Commission chairman Michael Lomax and Gov. Zell Miller put each government’s contribution at $300,000, for a total of $900,000. It was released at the County Commission’s meeting Wednesday.

The governor’s office said it was aware of the state commitment.

The event is expected to bring $150 million into the Atlanta-area economy, “or four times that of the 1992 World Series,” said the letter from the co-chairmen of the Super Bowl XXVIII Host Committee, BellSouth chairman John L. Clendenin and Atlanta Falcon owner Rankin Smith.
