Giants’ Baker NL Manager of Year

Dusty Baker, a rookie manager who led the San Francisco Giants to their most victories since 1962 but only a second-place finish, was voted National League manager of the year on Tuesday.

Baker received 15 first-place votes in balloting by the Baseball Writers Assn., four more than Jim Fregosi of the NL champion Philadelphia Phillies.

Robby Thompson, who batted .312 with 19 homers and 65 runs batted in for the San Francisco Giants, headed the list of seven players who filed for free agency Tuesday.

Also filing were Cincinnati second baseman Bip Roberts, New York Met third baseman Howard Johnson, Chicago White Sox pitcher Tim Belcher, Oakland second baseman Jerry Browne, Seattle catcher Dave Valle and Colorado pitcher Bruce Hurst.

The Angels will probably move third baseman Eduardo Perez to left field for the 1994 season, said Angel General Manager Whitey Herzog, who hopes to trade for an infielder during next week’s general manager meetings.

Tennis

Michael Stich rallied to beat Mikael Pernfors in the Stockholm Open, improving to 4-0 against Swedish players in Sweden in the past month.

Stich, a German seeded No. 4, won the second-round match, 6-7 (3-7), 7-5, 6-2. Third-seeded Boris Becker, a former three-time Stockholm Open champion, beat Aaron Krickstein, 7-5, 6-4, in his opening match and Jim Courier beat David Wheaton, 7-5, 5-7, 6-3, in his opening match.

Jeff Hornacek ended his holdout with the Philadelphia 76ers. . . . The Miami Heat fined center Manute Bol $25,000 for skipping two exhibitions to attend meetings in Washington concerning the civil war in his native Sudan. The money will be donated to a Sudanese relief fund.

Names in the News

The University of Washington hired Ralph Bayard as senior associate athletic director for compliance and internal operations, athletic director Barbara Hedges said. The position is a new one, created after Huskies’ NCAA rules violations led to stiff penalties, including a two-year bowl ban. Bayard, 44, has been associate executive director of the Washington Interscholastic Activities Assn.

Two teen-agers were charged with pelting the New Jersey home of Philadelphia Phillie relief pitcher Mitch Williams with eggs to show their displeasure with his performance in the World Series.

The University of Florida fired women’s swim Coach Mitch Ivey after a university investigation of his relationships with his swimmers. Ivey denied charges of misconduct after his firing.

Vinny Pazienza, 30, gained a unanimous decision over Robbie Sims in a 10-rounder bout at Ledyard, Conn. Pazienza, a former world lightweight and junior-middleweight champion, improved his record to 35-5.
