The people have spoken.

Sorry, Jim Everett, but Ram fans want your fanny on the bench and T.J. Rubley’s right arm on the field Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers.

Forget debates over abortion, gun control or school vouchers, the really pressing issue in Orange County these past weeks has been Everett or Rubley.

Tuesday, Rubley was a runaway winner in The Times’ quarterback survey. It was hardly a scientific poll, but the fans spoke loud and clear, and it’s Rubley they want.

By 5 p.m., 92.5% of those who called TimesLink or sent a fax voted for Rubley.

Chuck Knox, are you listening?

From Dan Ellsworth of Laguna Niguel: “Jim Everett hears more than just the footsteps from phantom sacks. He hears the gnawing sounds from failed self-confidence, lack of guts and the clanging of chains from father time who sits squarely on his throwing arm.”

Kenny Carpenter, Anaheim: “Time to get him out of there.”

Ron Gardea, Santa Monica: “Thanks to the new kid, I was not forced home early to do yard work. Keep T.J. Rubley in the starting position until he is replaced by someone who can do a better job.”

Kevin Cully, Irvine: “Play T.J.”

The folks (nine in number) at American Auto Service, Irvine: “All of us . . . feel that the Rams should start T.J. Rubley right away. We also feel the team should trade Everett as soon as possible for the best player available or a high draft choice.”

Robert Hubbert, Tustin: “(Everett) needs to sit down and watch . . . get some perspective. He seems to not be seeing himself as a large part of the problem.”

Dennis Katsis, Yorba Linda: “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it . . . Fix it!!! Rubley.”

Shane Rambo, Huntington Beach: “I’m tired of losing, so I say start Rubley. Give him a chance. The season is already over. I want to see what he can do.”

Paul Hostert, Fullerton: “Do you want Rams or Lambs? If it be Lambs, then Everett is your man. If it be Rams, then Rubley is your man.”

Joel Albert, Santa Ana: “He can’t scramble. He won’t take the hit. He can’t read defenses. He can’t audible. He’s too skinny. He’s an insult to all Ram fans. He doesn’t even belong in the NFL. Glanville was right. Everett doesn’t have the guts to be a cheerleader.”

And this from an unsigned fax: “Rubley, Rubley, Rubley. P.S. One vote for Everett by a San Fran fan.”

What say you, Everett defenders? All three of you.

Ed Kearns of El Toro: “Everett.”

Robert Moore, Newport Beach: “I say don’t trade Jim.”

Nancy L. Williams, Newport Beach: “The law of averages at any point in time is going to kick in and (Everett) will have a good game. Maybe Sunday is it.”
