AVP Players to Compete at Forum

Many of the world’s top pro beach and indoor volleyball players will compete in the Great Western Bank Team Cup tournament, which begins Thursday at the Forum in Inglewood.

Four teams will compete in the round-robin event, which features Kent Steffes, Mike Dodd and Tim Hovland of the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals. Matches start at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 10 and 17. The final is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 3.

The Loyola Marymount women’s volleyball team will travel to San Diego today to play a West Coast Conference match at 7 p.m.

The Lions (18-5, 7-1 in conference) are second to Santa Clara (17-5, 7-0) in the eight-member WCC. San Diego (17-3, 5-2) is third.

Loyola leads the conference in kills (16.17 a game), assists (14.76) and aces (1.93). Freshman outside hitter Suzanne Radcliffe (245 kills, 32 aces) and sophomore middle blocker Mardell Wrensch (224 kills, 21 aces) lead the Lions.

The Olympias Girls Development League will stage an invitational girls basketball tournament this weekend at Narbonne High and Harbor College.

The event will begin at noon and end at 7 p.m. on Saturday. On Sunday, the tournament starts at 9 a.m. and ends at 5 p.m. Admission is $1. (310) 632-1666.

Registration for the South Bay Youth Basketball girls and boys teams is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the El Segundo High cafeteria.

The clinics are open to youths in kindergarten through eighth grade. Team tryouts will take place on Nov. 6-7 and the season will go from December through March. The fee is $75. (310) 545-9809.

The City of Inglewood will play host to a junior tennis tournament this weekend and next at the Centinela Park Tennis Complex, 700 Warren Lane. (310) 412-5370.

The City of Hermosa Beach and the UCLA intramural department will offer beach flag football beginning on Nov. 6.

Games will be played south of the Hermosa Beach Pier. The single-elimination tournament begins at 9 a.m. and each team can have up to 15 players over the age of 18. The fee for each team is $50. There is a $12 fee each game for officials. (310) 318-0280.
