PREP FOOTBALL ROUNDUP : Lions Pounce on Toilers in the 4th

In a game of outstanding individual performances, Fairfax’s Tyrone Evans couldn’t be topped.

Evans rushed for 226 yards in 14 carries and scored three touchdowns--two rushing and one receiving--in a see-saw, 29-25 Coastal Conference victory over Manual Arts. Manual Arts and Fairfax exchanged leads six times in the game and combined for 35 points in the second quarter.

The Toilers’ Dartanyum Smith gave a heroic effort, rushing for 134 yards in 21 carries. Smith also recovered a fumble at the Lions’ 14-yard line, which led to 24-yard touchdown pass from Andre Griffin to Tim Boykins.

Manual Arts took the lead, 25-22, when Derrick Harris caught a 35-yard touchdown pass from Kareem Wafer with 4:40 remaining in the third quarter.

Evans, who scored on a 59-yard screen pass to end the half, ran for a 75-yard touchdown for the only fourth-quarter score .

Fremont 46, Roosevelt 0--The Pathfinders overwhelmed the Roughriders by rolling up 413 yards in total offense while holding Roosevelt to 99 total yards and only two first downs in a Southeastern Conference game.

After a slow start, Fremont used a seven-play, 80-yard drive featuring William Yates’ 24-yard touchdown pass to Andre Johnson. Yates rushed for 74 yards in 11 carries and was 10-for-13 for 153 yards and one touchdown.

Without Roughrider starting quarterback Frank Madrid, Roosevelt’s only effective player on offense was running back Jose Soria, who ran for 48 yards in six carries.

South Gate 48, Jordan 0--The host Rams amassed 530 yards of offense in a rout over the Bulldogs in a Southeastern Conference game.

Ram running back Roylando Jeffery rushed for 120 yards and two touchdowns in 13 carries before leaving the game early in the second quarter with an ankle injury. Tight end Mark Redoval closed out the onslaught with a 95-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Juan Vasquez.

South Gate held the Jordan offense to 55 yards and intercepted four Bulldog passes.

Franklin 18, Wilson 7--Junior quarterback Jeff Deno completed eight of 14 passes for 158 yards, and senior running back Octavio Salas rushed for 80 yards and a touchdown in 22 carries to lead the Panthers in a Northern Conference game at Wilson.

Franklin opened with a 14-play, 76-yard drive that was capped by a one-yard run by Salas, then took an 11-0 lead on a 27-yard field goal by Carlos Martinez. After the Mules responded with a 14-yard touchdown run by Buster Bradley, the Panthers put the game out of reach with a one-yard touchdown run by Octavio Verduzco in the third quarter.

Wilson was led by sophomore running back Arlin Slayton, who gained 58 yards in 12 carries.

Venice 39, Los Angeles 8--Robert Hayes carried the ball 24 times for 246 yards and four touchdowns to lead the visiting Gondoliers over the Romans in a Coastal Conference game.

Venice rolled up 322 yards on the ground. Quarterback Michael Blassi went six for 11 for 84 yards.

Roman quarterback Patrick Regan connected on 10 of 17 pass attempts for 89 yards and was intercepted once. The Romans managed only 54 yards rushing.

Los Angeles’ lone score came with about two minutes left on the clock as Shina Onalopa drove in from the eight-yard line.

Washington 25, Narbonne 7--Running back Joseph Brown rushed for 91 yards and a touchdown in nine carries to pace the Generals to their third consecutive victory in a Southern Pacific Conference game at Narbonne.

Gerrick Garrett added 83 yards in 16 carries, scoring on a pair of one-yard runs to propel Washington to a 12-0 first-quarter lead.

Dorsey 32, Gardena 6--Led by running back Che Johnson, the Dons routed Gardena in a Southern Pacific Conference game at Gardena.

Johnson scored three rushing touchdowns, including a 41-yard run in the third quarter. The Dons also scored on defense when Robert Guillory returned an interception 77 yards.

Dorsey shut down Gardena until late in the fourth quarter, when Jamel Brown ran six yards for the Mohicans’ only score.

San Pedro 28, Crenshaw 6--A pivotal third-quarter play for the Cougars failed, sealing the victory for San Pedro in a Southern Pacific Conference game at Daniels Field in San Pedro.

Trailing 10-6 with 2:55 in the third quarter, Crenshaw Coach R.J. Garrett elected to go for a first down on fourth-and-one at the 50-yard line. The Cougars’ plunge into the line was stopped, and the Pirates scored on the next play.

Crenshaw finished with 92 yards, all on the ground.

Garfield 13, Bell 7--Running back Armando Figueroa rushed for 93 yards and two touchdowns in 21 carries to lead the Bulldogs in a Southeastern Conference game at home.

Garfield marched 63 yards, all on the ground, on its second possession, which ended with Figueroa’s score on a five-yard run. Garfield allowed just three first downs in the first half.

Bell’s only score came when quarterback David Morales hit Freddy Alcala on a four-yard pass to cut the lead to 13-7.

Jefferson 34, Huntington Park 14--The Spartans were burned by the visiting Democrats as Jefferson scored four unanswered touchdowns in the first half of a Southeastern Conference game.

Democrat quarterback Anthony Martin was five-for-11 for 120 yards and four touchdowns.

Jefferson wide receiver Robinson scored on a 48-yard pass-and-run and on a 50-yard interception return as a defensive back.

Spartan backup quarterback Andre Medina completed a 12-yard pass to running back Ricardo Bogarin four minutes into the fourth quarter.
