COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Orange County Lifts South Team in Wrestling

Orange County wrestlers won four of their team’s six individual titles to lead the South to a 21-12 victory over the North in the 17th North-South Wrestling Classic Saturday at Fresno City College.

Three Rancho Santiago wrestlers won: Shane Holloway defeated Fresno’s Yero Washington, 12-11, at 126 pounds; David Niedringhaus beat Sacramento’s Aaron Reeves, 11-8, at 134, and Matt Padgett pinned West Valley’s Warren Newsome at 3 minutes 59 seconds.

For Golden West, Eric Gaunt won a 7-3 decision over Cuesta’s Trent Williams at 177, and Mike Bolster was defeated, 7-4, by Mike Carolan of Diablo Valley in the heavyweight match.

In the Moorpark Invitational cross-country meet:

Irvine Valley women win--Irvine Valley scored 106 points to 139 for San Diego Mesa. Orange Coast was fifth with 193.

In individual women’s competition, Mayra Medina of Irvine Valley was the top county finisher, running the 5,000-meter course in 19:35.9 for fourth. Emebet Shiferaw of Riverside won in 19:05.

In men’s team competition, Rancho Santiago was the highest placing Orange County team, taking sixth with 190 points. Cuyamaca was first with 56. Fidel Zavala of Rancho Santiago was ninth in 21:13.1 for 8,000 meters; Riverside’s Jimma Alamayehi won in 20:29.2.

In the Citrus men’s water polo tournament:

Rancho Santiago 15, Santa Monica 3--John Montrella scored five goals and Tom Cerasuolo added four to lead Rancho Santiago (20-8-2).
