Detectives from the Ventura County’s Sheriff Department are looking for two young men who were seen setting a vehicle on fire early Tuesday in Newbury Park.

The two bashed in a window of a 1991 Ford Explorer, poured a flammable liquid inside and threw a match, witnesses told police. The Explorer was parked in front of Hughes Market, where its owner works as a checker.

The men who set the blaze were seen running toward the Union 76 gas station on Ventu Park Road, Sheriff’s Detective Dennis Reed said.

The pair apparently knew the owner of the vehicle, Reed said, as witnesses heard them shout the owner’s name as they left the scene.

The fire destroyed the vehicle, estimated to be worth more than $10,000, Reed said.

Ventura County Crime Stoppers is offering up to $1,000 for information leading to the arrest of the two. Information can be anonymously phoned in at 494-TALK.
