COUNCIL MEN: Rosa Lee Measures was the top vote-getter in Tuesday’s Ventura City Council election. But she will be the only woman on the seven-member council. . . . “There is so much time involved,” said Jane Tolmach, who became Oxnard’s first councilwoman in 1970. “So many families need two incomes. That has slowed down the number of women running for office.”. . . Women hold only 25% of council seats in the county, but they have a 4-1 edge on the Board of Supervisors. Only one other California county has four female supervisors: Tehama, south of Mount Shasta. Three others have three-woman majorities.

Gender Gap

Eight of Ventira County’s 10 cities have male-dominated city councils.

All male: Moorpark Oxnard Male majority: Ventura (6-1) Camarillo (4-1) Fillmore (4-1) Ojai (4-1) Port Hueneme (4-1) Santa Paula (3-2) Female majority: Thousand Oaks (3-2) Simi Valley (3-2)

DEAR DIARY: Richard Nixon kept tapes that led to his downfall. Now the Senate wants to look at the intimate diaries of Sen. Robert Packwood. . . . Which raises the question: Why do politicians keep such potentially damaging records? Simple, said Jonathan Steepee, political science professor at Cal Lutheran: “The higher they get, the more likely they are to publish their memoirs. They want accurate records.”. . . Ventura County residents look more to the future, said Mark Pedersen at Thousand Oaks Stationers: “Diaries don’t sell well. Appointment books are much more popular.”

EMPTY CORRALS: The fires are out. Do you know where your horse is? Equestrians who had to evacuate horses during last week’s blazes are frantically calling stables in Moorpark and Ventura, trying to round up their steeds (B1). . . . The last firefighters from outside the county are expected to head home today--to places as far-flung as Hawaii, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado and New Mexico. . . . . The county Fire Department has 450 members. Needed to fight last week’s fires: another 1,500.

MAT MASTER: Moorpark College wrestler Jorge Ruiz pinned one opponent in 44 seconds. But his success hinges more on intensity than physical conditioning (C10). . . . “I usually just attack, attack, attack,” he said. “Sometimes it’s more psychological and mental than physical.”
