SANTA ANA — Mater Dei’s Steve Bodnar scored four touchdowns to lead the Monarchs to a 41-0 South Coast League victory over Dana Hills Thursday night at Santa Ana Stadium.
Bodnar carried the ball 16 times for 67 yards and two touchdowns and was quarterback John Flynn’s primary receiver, with five receptions for 98 yards and two more scores. Flynn completed nine passes in 12 attempts for 182 yards and three touchdowns.
Flynn’s counterpart, quarterback Scott Covington, had a rougher time of it against the Monarch pass rush. Covington completed nine of 23 attempts, all of them to wide receiver Mike Whittaker for 125 yards. He was sacked nine times for 54 yards in losses, with Mike Rovira and Derrick Ford applying most of the pressure.
Mater Dei (8-1, 4-0 in league) remained in first place, while Dana Hills (1-8, 0-4) fell deeper into the league cellar.
Bodnar scored on runs of two and four yards and Flynn hit wide receiver David Castleton with a 24-yard touchdown pass to give the Monarchs a 21-0 halftime lead.
Flynn hit tight end Leie Sualua with a 15-yard touchdown pass early in the third quarter, and Bodnar set up his third touchdown with a 27-yard punt return to the Dolphin 29. Bodnar tipped the ball to himself for an acrobatic 15-yard touchdown reception from Flynn.
Jason Lundstrom’ pass interception set up the final score on Bodnar’s four-yard run with 1:50 left in the third quarter.
