Asheiki Preston’s two-point conversion pass with 52 seconds remaining at Lawrence, Kan., fell incomplete Saturday as No. 6 Nebraska squeaked past Kansas, 21-20, for its 25th consecutive victory over the Jayhawks.

The Cornhuskers’ Barron Miles was credited at first with tipping the ball away from Ashaundi Smith, but officials reviewed the play and said the ball wasn’t touched.

The Jayhawks, led by freshman running back June Henley, marched 80 yards in 17 plays after the Cornhuskers, 16-point favorites, took the lead on Tommie Frazier’s scoring pass.

Henley, who had 148 yards in 37 carries, vaulted across the goal line from three yards out to pull Kansas within a point.

After a timeout, Preston went back to throw for two points and Kansas’ first victory over Nebraska, 9-0 overall and 5-0 in the Big Eight, since 1968. But the pass into a crowded corner of the end zone was incomplete. The Cornhuskers then recovered an onside kick, ending all hope for the the Jayhawks (4-6, 2-3).

Iowa State drove 80 and 68 yards to erase a 17-6 Kansas State lead, then went 30 yards for an insurance touchdown. James McMillion scored the go-ahead touchdown on a fourth-down, one-yard run with 3:49 left.

The Cyclones (3-6, 2-3) denied the Wildcats (6-2-1, 2-2-1) a victory that may have secured a berth in a major bowl game. The Wildcats still need to win one more game to get the required six victories over Division I opponents.
