LOS ANGELES : Panel Rejects Bid to Allow Wood Shingle Roofs

A Los Angeles City Council committee angrily recommended rejection Monday of a request by the manufacturers of wood roof shingles to allow their products to be used in the city.

The council’s Public Safety Committee voted against altering a city ordinance, approved in 1989, that prohibits the construction of new wood roofs.

Councilman Marvin Braude, chairman of the committee, called the request by the Cedar Shake and Shingle Bureau “irrational,” given the recent wildfires that burned hundreds of homes across Southern California.

Representatives of a wood roofing manufacturer had requested that the council approve the use of chemically treated wood shingles, which they said are as resistant to fire as other roofing materials.

The manufacturer said that if permitted to sell treated wood shingles within the city, it would drop a lawsuit challenging the city’s ban.
