In an otherwise forgettable season for Stanford, Steve Stenstrom has been a quarterback to remember.

The 6-foot-2, 200-pound junior broke John Elway’s single-season Pacific 10 Conference passing record Saturday, passing for 407 yards and three touchdowns as the Cardinal held off Oregon, 38-34.

Stenstrom completed 28 of 37 passes against the Ducks, who were eliminated from bowl consideration with the loss. His 407 yards passing matched his career high.

“I think that’s the best I’ve ever seen him play,” said Stanford wide receiver Mark Harris, who had 12 catches for 189 yards.

Stenstrom, who completed 16 consecutive passes at one point, has 3,281 passing yards for the season, breaking the conference record of 3,242 set by Elway of Stanford in 1982.

“It’s a great honor because John Elway’s a guy I grew up watching play,” Stenstrom said. “When I came to Stanford, those numbers seemed so impressive and insurmountable. Now to see it happen is really exciting for me.”

He also broke the Cardinal school record for most completions in a season with 273 and is just 10 short of the Pac-10 mark.

Stanford, 4-6 overall and 2-5 in the Pac-10, faces plays host to Cal next Saturday.

Oregon (5-5, 2-5) had a chance for a berth in the Alamo Bowl if it won Saturday and next week against Oregon State, but the Ducks were taken apart by Stenstrom’s precision passing.

The Cardinal scored on six straight possessions to build a 38-16 lead with 19 seconds left in the third quarter.
