Titans, Anteaters Struggle in Regional Cross-Country Meet

UC Irvine and Cal State Fullerton completed their men’s and women’s cross-country seasons Saturday at the NCAA Region 8 meet when they failed to advance any teams or individuals to the national finals.

Fullerton’s Mike Tansley was the county’s top performer, finishing eighth in the men’s race in 30 minutes 19.8 seconds for 10,000 meters at Lewis River Golf Course. Josephat Kapkory of Washington State won in 29:20.5.

Fullerton finished ninth in the men’s team race with 210 points to 56 for regional champion Portland. Irvine, with Todd Coulston finishing 46th in 31:40.2, was 11th with 314.

In the women’s race, Irvine finished 12th with 302 points and Fullerton 15th with 416. Arizona edged Stanford, 59-65, for the title.

Irvine freshman Laura Monson was 38th in 18:01.93 for 5,000 meters, with sophomore teammate Josephine Yaba 45th in 18:13.78. UCLA junior Karen Hecox won in 16:41.6.
