Price Says Success May Have Spoiled Daly

Too much, too soon?

John Daly, suspended by the PGA for a second time, would probably have been better off if he had struggled to start his career, Nick Price said.

“John Daly had the world at his fingertips,” said Price, the 1992 PGA champion. “He’s got a lot to learn.”

Daly, who won the 1991 PGA Championship in the first major he entered, was suspended this month by the PGA Tour after picking up his ball and failing to complete a hole at the Kapalua International in Hawaii.

He previously had sought treatment for a drinking problem that prompted his wife to call the police when Daly trashed their house in Colorado during an argument.

“He’s had a difficult time with all the success he’s had,” Price said. “He has to play golf and not do foolish things out there.

“People say to me all the time, ‘You look like you appreciate your success,’ ” Price said. “Well, I’ve come right up from the bottom. But success has come easy to him.

“He’s had all the sponsor’s invitations and exemptions into tournaments and sometimes I question whether he fully appreciates that.”
