PRO FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : RAIDERS : A Different Plan May Be in Order

Share

With a struggling running game, the Raiders relied mainly on the arm of quarterback Jeff Hostetler when they played host to the San Diego Chargers three weeks ago at the Coliseum. The tactic almost worked as Hostetler passed for a career-best 424 yards in the Raiders’ 30-23 loss. Don’t look for a replay when the teams meet again at San Diego on Sunday.

“We didn’t win the game, and that is the bottom line,” Hostetler said. “We have to come out and change the outcome. When we played last time, we knew going in that we would put the ball in the air. But you never go in saying you are going to pass for 424 yards.”

Compared to their last meeting, the biggest change between the teams is the Raiders’ running game, with rookie Greg Robinson gaining 210 yards in his last 37 carries. Robinson, who has 424 yards this season, needs to gain 274 more to set a team rushing record for rookies.

As a wide receiver, Rocket Ismail may have caught only 14 passes for 191 yards this season, but as a kickoff returner, the former Notre Dame standout has excelled. With 12 returns for 291 yards, Ismail leads the AFC with a 24.3 yards-per-return average. . . . The Raider wives on Monday will host a casino night and silent auction at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Marina del Rey. Raider players and coaches will be among the dealers with proceeds benefiting Volunteers of America’s services to inner-city youth. Details: (213) 389-1500.
